Open House

I frequently get asked by clients if I should host an open house for their listing. This is one of those questions that does not have a definitive answer either way. If your agent is pushing too hard in one direction they are probably pushing for their own agenda.

If you own a very high-end, multi-million dollar home then I do not recommend doing open houses. You put your valuables at risk and you end up opening up your home for people who go to open houses as a recreational activity. Nor do I recommend hosting open houses for an elderly person or a family with very small children that nap during the afternoon.

I like to suggest to my clients that at the minimum we do open houses for the first two weeks of the listing and by then all the active buyers have had a chance to see a property. If clients absolutely believe that an open should be done throughout the selling period, then I will accommodate this too. It’s your home and it’s really about what works best for you.
